Background

He joined Japanese National Railways in April 1974 and moved to East Japan Railway Company in the April 1987 breakup and privatization. He became a Director in June 2000, Managing Director in June 2003 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2008, becoming President after four years as Executive Vice President. In the fiscal year ended March 2010, before he took office, the major shareholders were led by Japan Trustee Services Bank with 6.54%, followed by trust banks and city banks, with no controlling shareholder.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law (1974)

Selection

He became President in April 2012, succeeding Satoshi Seino. In the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before he took office, consolidated operating revenue was ¥2,532.1 billion and operating income ¥360.0 billion, with operating revenue stuck in the ¥2.5 trillion range for three straight years. The year before that, the fiscal year ended March 2011, revenue had fallen because of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and net income had dropped from ¥120.2 billion to ¥76.2 billion. The appointment took over recovery from the disaster and the building of non-railway sources of earnings.

Initiatives

Over his six years, consolidated operating revenue rose by ¥278.3 billion, from ¥2,671.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2013 to ¥2,950.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2018. Operating income went from ¥397.6 billion to ¥481.3 billion and net income from ¥175.3 billion to ¥288.9 billion. The large-scale redevelopment of the former rail yard site in Shinagawa got moving during his tenure and appears to have been handed on to his successor Yuji Fukasawa.
