Background
He joined East Japan Railway Company in April 1989. Whereas every President up to his predecessor Yuji Fukasawa had been hired by Japanese National Railways, he belongs to the generation that joined after the 1987 breakup and privatization. He became an Executive Officer in June 2015, Managing Director in June 2018 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 2021, and became President 35 years after joining. The major shareholders, led by The Master Trust Bank of Japan with 13.6%, are trust banks and financial institutions, with neither a founding family nor a parent company.
Selection
He became President in April 2024, succeeding Yuji Fukasawa. In the fiscal year ended March 2024, the year before he took office, consolidated operating revenue was ¥2,730.1 billion, operating income ¥345.2 billion and net income ¥196.4 billion, two years after returning to profit from an operating loss of ¥153.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2022. Once the losses had been made good, management was handed to the post-privatization generation.
Initiatives
In his first year, the fiscal year ended March 2025, consolidated operating revenue was ¥2,887.5 billion, operating income ¥376.8 billion and net income ¥224.2 billion. In his second year, the fiscal year ended March 2026, operating revenue was ¥3,084.7 billion, operating income ¥414.3 billion and net income ¥247.8 billion, with operating revenue topping the pre-pandemic ¥3,002.0 billion of the fiscal year ended March 2019. He has carried on the two-axis management of railways and lifestyle solutions adopted under his predecessor.
