Background

Born in Yamanashi Prefecture in 1907, he graduated from Keio University in 1931. He became a Director of Keio Teito Electric Railway in June 1949, then Managing Director in May 1957, Senior Managing Director in November 1963 and Executive Vice President in November 1967, and was appointed President in June 1969. He spent 20 years inside the company between joining the board and becoming President.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Law, Political Science (1931)

Selection

His predecessor was Sadao Inoue. In the 1967 edition of the directory, Koichi Egara and Masatada Inoue were among the Senior Managing Directors, but only Kobayashi was promoted to Executive Vice President in November 1967, becoming President a year and a half later. In June 1969 the vice presidency was reorganized into two posts held by Egara and Masatada Inoue, and the lineup of one President and two Executive Vice Presidents became the route for later successions.

Initiatives

Keio Plaza Hotel, set up two months before he took office, opened at Shinjuku's west exit in June 1971 as a 47-story skyscraper hotel, leading the development of the Shinjuku subcenter. In October 1970 the company set up Keio Housing (now Keio Real Estate). It was a period that layered hotels and real estate development on top of the department store and supermarket launched under his predecessor.
