Background

He joined Mitsubishi Estate in 1950. He served as General Manager of the Administration Department from 1973 and of the General Affairs Department from 1975, and became Director and General Manager of General Affairs in 1977. He became Managing Director in 1981, Senior Managing Director in 1983 and Executive Vice President in 1986, and was appointed President in 1987. As of March 1980, before he took office, the major shareholders were Mitsubishi group financial institutions: Meiji Life Insurance with 3.86%, Tokio Marine and Fire Insurance with 3.80% and Mitsubishi Bank with 3.79%.

Education: Chuo University, Faculty of Economics (1950)

Selection

He became President in 1987 as his predecessor Tatsuji Ito retired to the position of senior adviser. A newspaper in August 1988 wrote that with the original Marunouchi Building 65 years old, the aging of the company's buildings was becoming conspicuous, and that Marunouchi's standing was starting to waver as new urban axes formed in Shinjuku, where the metropolitan government was moving, and on the waterfront.

Initiatives

In January 1988 he announced a redevelopment plan covering 113 hectares of Marunouchi, Yurakucho, Otemachi and Yaesu centered on Tokyo Station. It treated the area as part of an international financial center, with a set proportion of the added floor space to be allocated preferentially to foreign companies and financial institutions. With a total investment of about ¥6 trillion and some 60 buildings of 40 to 50 stories, it was dubbed the plan to Manhattanize Marunouchi, but it foundered amid local opposition voiced as "Do they mean to remake other people's buildings as they please?" In February 1990 the company expanded overseas by taking an 80% stake in the Rockefeller Group of the US.
