Background
He joined Mitsubishi Estate in April 1962. He handled personnel and accounting, becoming General Manager of the Personnel Department in October 1986, Director and General Manager of the Accounting Department in June 1988 and Managing Director and General Manager of Accounting in June 1991. He became Senior Managing Director in June 1995 and Executive Vice President in June 1998, and in April 2000 also took charge of the Building Business Division while remaining Executive Vice President. He became President in April 2001.
Selection
He became President in April 2001 as his predecessor Takeshi Fukuzawa moved to Chairman. For the preceding year he had headed the Building Business Division as Executive Vice President, in charge of the Marunouchi leasing business. In the fiscal year ended March 2001, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥630.9 billion and net income ¥19.8 billion. The handover came as the rebuilding of the original Marunouchi Building was a year from completion, at a time when Marunouchi's flagship buildings were being replaced.
Initiatives
The second Marunouchi Building was completed in August 2002 and opened that September. About 2.8 million people visited in its first month or so, and a newspaper reported that, busy on weekdays and weekends alike, it had turned the office district around Tokyo Station into a district for consumers. Marunouchi's streetscape of buildings uniformly capped at 31 meters, maintained since the days of Takejiro Watanabe, was broken by this skyscraper. In 2005 the company took a stake in the condominium developer Towa Real Estate, reaching into residential sales.
