Background

He joined Nomura Securities in April 1975, became a Director in June 1998 and Managing Director in June 2000. After the move to a holding company in October 2001 he served as Managing Director and Senior Managing Director of Nomura Securities, and in June 2003 became Executive Officer of Nomura Holdings and Senior Managing Executive Officer of Nomura Securities. He left his holding company executive post in March 2006 and from April that year served as Executive Vice President of Nomura Securities. His shareholding in the officers' list for the fiscal year ended March 2011 was 62,300 shares, about half the 121,400 of his predecessor Nobuyuki Koga.

Selection

In April 2008 he succeeded Nobuyuki Koga as CEO and President. He took office in his 33rd year with the company, a longer climb than the 29 years it took Koga, who joined in 1974, to become President in April 2003. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, just before he took office, the group had posted a consolidated net loss of ¥67.8 billion. His appointment came two years after he left his holding company executive post in March 2006.

Initiatives

In October 2008, six months after he took office, the group took over the Asia-Pacific and Europe and Middle East operations of the bankrupt Lehman Brothers. The financial crisis and integration costs produced a consolidated net loss of ¥708.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009, and it returned to net income of ¥67.7 billion in the FY ended March 2010. Net income was ¥28.6 billion in the FY ended March 2011, and in the FY ended March 2012 net sales were ¥1,851.7 billion and net income ¥11.5 billion. From June 2011 he served as Director, Representative Executive Officer and Group CEO.
