Background

He joined in 1981 and became a Director of Nomura Securities 22 years later, in April 2003. He became its Executive Officer and Senior Managing Director in April 2009 and Representative Executive Officer and President in April 2012, and in August that year also became Representative Executive Officer and Group CEO of the holding company. From June 2013 he has also been a Director. A career employee, he took 31 years from joining to become President.

Education: Chuo University, Faculty of Law (1981)

Selection

In April 2012 he succeeded Kenichi Watanabe as Representative Executive Officer and President of Nomura Securities. Consolidated net income for the fiscal year ended March 2012, the year before he took office, was ¥11.5 billion, a result that left almost nothing on the bottom line against pre-tax profit of ¥85.0 billion. Two years earlier, in the FY ended March 2011, consolidated net income had been only ¥28.6 billion. The appointment appears to have entrusted rebuilding a core business with thin profits to someone who had spent 31 years inside the company.

Initiatives

Of his eight years, consolidated net income was in the ¥200 billion range four times from the fiscal year ended March 2014 to the FY ended March 2018. In the FY ended March 2019, however, the group posted a consolidated pre-tax loss of ¥37.7 billion and a net loss of ¥100.4 billion, the only loss of his tenure. The following FY ended March 2020 it recovered to pre-tax profit of ¥248.3 billion and net income of ¥216.9 billion. He stepped down as President in April 2020 and became Chairman. Rebuilding domestic retail, with the loss in between, appears to have been the main theme of the latter half of his term.
