Background
A career employee who joined in 1974, he spent 29 years inside the company before becoming President. He became a Director in June 1995, his 21st year, then Managing Director in April 1999 and Director and Executive Vice President in June 2000. It took just over a year from Managing Director to Executive Vice President and less than three years from Executive Vice President to President, reaching the top eight years after becoming an officer.
Selection
In April 2003 he rose from Director and Executive Vice President to President. In the fiscal year ended March 2003, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥566.2 billion, down 20% from ¥705.3 billion the year before. Consolidated net income, however, was ¥119.9 billion, above the prior year's ¥102.7 billion. Amid a market in which sales were shrinking, the appointment appears to have handed over to an insider who had served eight years in management.
Initiatives
Consolidated results peaked during his tenure in the fiscal year ended March 2006, with net sales of ¥1,145.6 billion and net income of ¥304.3 billion. That year the top ten shareholders were trust accounts and foreign financial institutions, led by Japan Trustee Services Bank with 5.47%. In the FY ended March 2008, however, consolidated net sales fell to ¥787.2 billion with a net loss of ¥67.8 billion, so his final year ended in the red. He stepped down as President in April 2008 and became Director and Representative Executive Officer.
