Background
He joined JUSCO in March 1979 and advanced to Director in May 1990, Managing Director in February 1992 and Senior Managing Director in May 1995. He is the eldest son of Takuya Okada. The shareholder register for the fiscal year ended February 2015 lists no Okada family members as individuals; instead the AEON Environmental Foundation holds 2.55% and the Okada Cultural Foundation 2.44%. The founding family's capital remains through these foundations.
Selection
On June 10, 1997, Kenji Tanaka was arrested; Chairman Takuya Okada, who was in Hong Kong, returned on the afternoon of the 11th, conferred with officers of managing director rank and above, and held a press conference that night at the Makuhari headquarters. A promotion planned for 2000 was moved up three years. Twenty-seven years after the merger of equals, the founding family's eldest son took over management.
Initiatives
In August 2001 he renamed the company AEON Co., Ltd. It grew by taking over struggling competitors, making the reorganizing company MYCAL a subsidiary in November 2003 and Daiei a subsidiary through a tender offer in August 2013. In August 2008 it transferred its retail business to AEON Retail through a corporate split and turned the parent into a pure holding company. In November 2011 it made Marunaka and Sanyo Marunaka subsidiaries, and in March 2022 made Fuji a subsidiary through a joint holding company structure.
