Background

He joined JUSCO in April 1983 and became head of China development at AEON Mall in March 2011, Managing Director in May 2014 and Representative Director and President in February 2015. He returned to AEON itself as an Executive Officer in March 2016 and advanced to Representative Executive Officer and Executive Vice President in March 2019. A career employee, he moved into top management of the parent after developing shopping centers in China.

Selection

In March 2020 Motoya Okada, President for 23 years, moved to Director, Representative Executive Officer and Chairman, and Representative Executive Officer and Executive Vice President Akio Yoshida became President. In the fiscal year ended February 2020, consolidated net sales were ¥7,505.4 billion, operating profit ¥215.5 billion and net income ¥26.8 billion. He was the first President from outside the founding family since Kenji Tanaka, who stepped down in 1997.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended February 2021, his first year, the COVID-19 pandemic caused a consolidated net loss of ¥71.0 billion. In March 2022 the company made Fuji, the largest retailer in the Chugoku-Shikoku region, a consolidated subsidiary through a joint holding company structure, and in March 2026 it split Daiei into the Tokyo metropolitan area and Kinki, moving the Tokyo-area business under United Super Markets Holdings. In the FY ended February 2026, consolidated net sales grew to ¥9,355.4 billion and net income to ¥72.6 billion.
