Background
He joined Mitsubishi Corporation in April 1979 and built his career in feed, livestock and food sales. He became an Executive Officer in April 2010 and Senior Vice President in April 2013, and became President from CEO of the Living Essentials Group. Unlike his predecessors, who came from machinery such as ships and heavy equipment, he rose entirely through sales of goods close to consumers.
Selection
In June 2016 he succeeded Ken Kobayashi as President. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, just before, the Metals Group's equity-method investment result swung to a ¥278.9 billion loss due to impairments in the Chilean copper business and other factors, and the consolidated bottom line fell to a ¥149.4 billion loss. The change came after the first net loss since the company began consolidated reporting in fiscal 1969, and rebuilding an earnings structure tilted toward resources was the task he inherited.
Initiatives
In February 2017 the company raised its stake in Lawson to 50.11% through a tender offer, spending about ¥144.0 billion to make it a consolidated subsidiary. Its November 2018 mid-term corporate strategy called for strengthening the downstream of each business area and made decarbonization a growth area. In November 2019, teamed with Chubu Electric Power, it won exclusive negotiating rights for the Dutch utility Eneco, and in March 2020 acquired all its shares for about €4.1 billion, or about ¥490 billion. In December 2021 its consortium won all three sea areas off Akita and Chiba, totaling about 1.74 million kilowatts, in the first round of Japan's offshore wind auctions.
