Background

He joined Mitsubishi Corporation in May 1965, became General Manager of the Corporate Planning Secretariat in June 1992 and a Director in June 1995. From April 1997 he oversaw corporate administration and development as a functional officer, became CEO of the New Business Initiative Group in April 2000 and Executive Vice President in June 2001, and then became President. His career ran more through the President's office and the functional and business investment side than the sales front line.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, Industrial Mechanical Engineering (1965)

Selection

In April 2004 he succeeded Mikio Sasaki as President. During his predecessor's seven years, Mitsubishi Corporation had acquired Lawson shares from Daiei and entered downstream business management. What Yorihiko Kojima sought with the 2000 investment was not more trade but a stake large enough to make Lawson a consolidated subsidiary and take responsibility for its management. The man who had put together the business investment became President.

Initiatives

The six years from 2004 that he served coincided with a period when demand from emerging economies pushed up copper and iron ore prices and trading companies competed to acquire resource interests. Mitsubishi Corporation kept the Lawson shares acquired from Daiei and placed capital in both resources and the downstream. In the shareholder structure, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, which held 2.9% directly in the fiscal year ended March 2006, had shifted to holding through a retirement benefit trust by the FY ended March 2010, and the top positions were held by trust banks, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance and Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance.
