He joined Olympus Optical in October 1964, became a Director in June 1993 and Managing Director in June 1998. Born in February 1941, it took him 29 years to reach the board, and he became President 37 years after joining, at the age of 60. His shareholding listed in the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2010 was 39,600 shares, more than the 14,900 to 18,065 shares of the three Executive Vice Presidents in the same table.

Selection

In June 2001 he succeeded Masatoshi Kishimoto as Representative Director and President. His previous post was Managing Director, held since June 1998, and he rose to President without passing through Senior Managing Director or Executive Vice President. In the fiscal year ended March 2001, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥466.7 billion and net income ¥11.7 billion, a recovery from ¥1.8 billion in the FY ended March 2000.

Initiatives

In October 2003 the imaging business was spun off as Olympus Imaging. The company posted a consolidated net loss of ¥11.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2005, but after the turnaround of the digital camera business, net income was ¥28.5 billion in the FY ended March 2006, and results grew to net sales of ¥1,128.8 billion and operating income of ¥112.6 billion in the FY ended March 2008. In the FY ended March 2009 the company posted a net loss of ¥114.8 billion. In April 2011 he handed the presidency to Michael Woodford and became Representative Director and Chairman.
