Selection
In June 1967, Tetsuo Nakano stepped back to Chairman and Naito became President, in his 36th year with the company. Whereas Shokichi Kanda, Akira Takahashi and Tetsuo Nakano had all come over from Ataka Shokai or Nippon Life Insurance, Naito had worked only at Olympus Optical since joining. In the fiscal year ended October 1966, before he took office, non-consolidated net sales fell to ¥7.98 billion from ¥8.21 billion the year before, and net income also fell from ¥0.34 billion to ¥0.31 billion.
Initiatives
In an article he contributed in November 1967, he named medical equipment and information as the two priority areas and set out a policy of making fiber technology their common foundation. In January 1968 the company established the U.S. sales company Olympus Corporation of America, strengthening sales of microscopes and medical equipment. In March 1969 he set up a new Third Business Division, raising endoscopes, begun at the request of doctors, to an investment target alongside microscopes and cameras. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥9.5 billion in the fiscal year ended October 1967 to ¥18.5 billion in the FY ended October 1971.
