Background

Born in Nagano in 1902, he graduated from Pitman's College in Britain in 1928. From January 1929 he served as secretary general of the Japanese Association in London, and in September 1932 joined Ataka Shokai. He moved to Olympus Optical in December 1940, brought in as General Manager of General Affairs. He became a Director in June 1945, Representative Director and Managing Director in December that year, and Senior Managing Director in February 1953. His career ran through overseas work and general affairs, and he was not an optical engineer.

Education: Pittoman Higher Commercial School (1928)

Selection

In December 1961, Akira Takahashi stepped back to Chairman and Nakano became President, 21 years after joining and after eight years as Senior Managing Director. Whereas Takahashi had come from Nippon Life Insurance, Nakano came from Ataka Shokai, the same company as Shokichi Kanda, President after the war. With this, Olympus Optical entrusted its presidency to an executive from outside the company for the third consecutive time.

Initiatives

In August 1963 the company opened the Hachioji facility in Hachioji, Tokyo. In the same year of 1963 it completed a fiberscope using its own optical fibers, extending the gastrocamera into the endoscope. In May 1964 it established the European sales company Olympus Optical Co. (Europa) GmbH, strengthening sales in Europe. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥2.86 billion in the fiscal year ended October 1961 to ¥7.98 billion in the FY ended October 1966, his last year as President.
