Background
He joined Olympus in April 1980. He became an Executive Officer in June 2009, Director and Senior Executive Managing Officer in April 2012, and from April 2016 oversaw finance as Executive Vice President and CFO. He became President in June 2019, in his 39th year with the company, a promotion after three years as CFO.
Selection
In June 2019 he succeeded Hiroyuki Sasa as Representative Executive Officer, President and CEO. In the fiscal year ended March 2019, the year before he took office, operating income was ¥28.3 billion on revenue of ¥793.8 billion, down to a third of the ¥81.0 billion of the year before. Net income also shrank from ¥46.1 billion to ¥8.1 billion. The change appears to have entrusted the restoration of earning power to the CFO who had overseen finance.
Initiatives
In the fiscal year ended March 2020, his first year, operating income rebounded to ¥92.2 billion, more than three times the ¥28.3 billion of the year before. It grew to ¥146.2 billion in the FY ended March 2022 and ¥186.6 billion in the FY ended March 2023, and revenue of ¥881.9 billion exceeded the ¥793.8 billion of the year before he took office. Employees fell by just over 2,300, from 35,124 in the FY ended March 2019 to 32,805 in the FY ended March 2023. He stepped down as President in April 2023, then returned from October 2024 to June 2025.
