Background
He joined Mazda in April 1977 and came up through production until becoming Executive Officer and head of the Hofu plant in June 2004. He rose to Managing Executive Officer in April 2008 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in June 2010, and became Representative Director, President and CEO in June 2013. Ford's stake had fallen from 29.0% in the fiscal year ended March 2006 to 10.98% in the FY ended March 2010, and a production executive rose to President as the capital backing weakened.

In the fiscal year ended March 2013, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥2,205.2 billion and operating income ¥53.9 billion, as the company emerged from two straight years of net losses starting in the FY ended March 2011. In the FY ended March 2012 it had posted an operating loss of ¥38.7 billion and a net loss of ¥107.7 billion. Initiatives
He advanced the dissolution of the capital alliance with Ford, whose stake fell from 10.98% in the fiscal year ended March 2010 to 2.08% in the FY ended March 2015. In 2017 Mazda concluded a capital and business alliance with Toyota Motor and agreed to set up a 50-50 production joint venture in Alabama. During his tenure, consolidated net sales grew from ¥2,205.2 billion in the FY ended March 2013 to ¥3,474.0 billion in the FY ended March 2018, operating income from ¥53.9 billion to ¥146.4 billion, and employees from 37,745 to 49,755.
