Background

He joined Mazda in April 1980 and became a Director in June 1999, 19 years later. After serving as Executive Officer from June 2002 and Managing Executive Officer from April 2006, he became Representative Director, Executive Vice President and Executive Officer in June 2013. It took him 38 years from joining to become President, 19 of them as an officer, including five as Executive Vice President. A career employee, he had never worked anywhere but Mazda.

In June 2018 he succeeded Masamichi Kogai as Representative Director, President and CEO, with his predecessor moving to Representative Director and Chairman. In the fiscal year ended March 2018, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,474.0 billion and operating income ¥146.4 billion, up from operating income of ¥125.7 billion in the FY ended March 2017. The change came after Ford's stake fell to 2.08% in the FY ended March 2015, and the job passed to an executive who had supported the top as Executive Vice President for five years.

After he took office, consolidated net sales fell to ¥2,882.0 billion and operating income to ¥8.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2021, with a net loss of ¥31.6 billion. The company recovered to operating income of ¥104.2 billion in the FY ended March 2022, and to net sales of ¥3,826.7 billion and operating income of ¥142.0 billion in the FY ended March 2023. Over his five years, net sales grew from ¥3,474.0 billion to ¥3,826.7 billion and net income from ¥112.0 billion to ¥142.8 billion. Employees fell from 49,755 to 48,481.
