Background

He joined Mazda in April 1967 and became General Manager of the Planning Division in January 1996. He rose to Director in June that year, Managing Director in June 1997 and Senior Managing Director in December 1999, and from June 2002 served as Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, as Representative Director, Executive Vice President and Executive Officer, he oversaw external affairs, purchasing and administration and was in charge of the secretariat, personnel and auditing. An executive who came up through planning and administration, he held 89 thousand shares as of the FY ended March 2012.

In November 2008 he became Representative Director, President and CEO, succeeding Hisakazu Imaki. In the same month of November 2008, Ford Motor Company cut its stake in Mazda to 13.8%. Consolidated net sales for the fiscal year ended March 2009 fell to ¥2,535.9 billion from ¥3,475.7 billion the year before, and the company posted an operating loss of ¥28.4 billion and a net loss of ¥71.4 billion. With the retreat of the largest shareholder and losses coinciding, the Executive Vice President who had overseen external affairs and administration was installed as President.

Initiatives

Through a public offering in October 2009 and a third-party allotment in November that year, Ford Motor Company's stake fell to 11.0%. It fell to 3.5% in November 2010 and 2.1% at the end of March 2012, thinning out the capital alliance concluded in November 1979. In September 2011 Mazda established the production company Mazda de Mexico Vehicle Operation in Mexico as a joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation. After posting a consolidated net loss of ¥107.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2012, the company returned to net income of ¥34.3 billion in the FY ended March 2013.
