Selection

In August 2003 he became Representative Director, President and CEO, succeeding Lewis Booth. Seven years had passed since Ford Motor Company raised its stake to 33.4% in May 1996. Even in the officer list for the fiscal year ended March 2007, the posts of Executive Vice President and Executive Officer and of Senior Managing Executive Officer and CFO were held by people from Ford. In the FY ended March 2003, consolidated net sales were ¥2,364.5 billion and ordinary income ¥40.7 billion, a recovery from ¥2,094.9 billion and ¥19.2 billion the year before. With Ford still holding 30% of the shares, a career employee who had come up through engineering was named President.

Initiatives

In January 2005 Mazda established Mazda (China) Enterprise Management Consulting to oversee its China business, and in March that year set up FAW Mazda Motor Sales as a joint venture with FAW Group. In September that year it established Changan Ford Mazda Engine as a joint venture with Changan Automobile Group and others, and mass production began at the Nanjing plant in October 2007. In October 2003 the company delisted from the Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka and Sapporo stock exchanges. Consolidated net sales rose from ¥2,094.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 to ¥2,919.8 billion in the FY ended March 2006, and ordinary income from ¥19.2 billion to ¥101.5 billion.
