Background

Born in Hiroshima in 1922, he graduated from Keio University's Faculty of Law in September 1947. He worked his way through affiliated sales companies, becoming a Director of Hiroshima Mazda in February 1956, its President in May that year and President of Mazda Auto Hiroshima in September 1959, before moving to Toyo Kogyo as Executive Vice President in June 1961. He became Executive Vice President without passing through a department head post at the head office, and his career before becoming President was confined to sales companies controlled by the founding family.

Education: Keio University, Faculty of Law, Political Science (1947)

Selection

He became President in November 1970, after more than nine years as Executive Vice President from June 1961. Tokinosuke Murao, who served as Executive Vice President in the same period, had graduated from Hiroshima Higher Technical School in March 1927, joined in June 1937 and risen entirely within the head office: Director in August 1939, Managing Director in December 1943, Senior Managing Director in December 1959 and Executive Vice President in December 1969. His predecessor was his father, Tsuneji Matsuda, and it was an appointment that put founding-family succession ahead of the internal pecking order.

Initiatives

Sales grew from ¥344.3 billion in the fiscal year ended October 1972 to ¥518.2 billion in the FY ended October 1974, while ordinary income fell from ¥12.8 billion in the FY ended October 1973 to ¥8.2 billion in the FY ended October 1974, and in the FY ended October 1975 the company swung into the red with an ordinary loss of ¥17.3 billion and a net loss of ¥1.7 billion. In January 1976 Tsutomu Murai, a Managing Director of Sumitomo Bank, came in as Executive Vice President, assisting the President and overseeing the personnel and public relations departments. Kohei Matsuda stepped back to Chairman in December 1977, handing the presidency to Yoshiki Yamasaki.
