Background

He joined Sharp in March 1969. He became deputy head of the Electronic Equipment Group in April 1986 and Director and deputy head of the Domestic Sales Group in June 1987, and from April 1990 oversaw the home appliance business as Managing Director. He moved to Senior Managing Director and head of the Overseas Business Group in October 1992 and became President in June 1998. It took him 29 years from joining to become President and 11 years from joining the board.

Education: Kyoto University, Faculty of Agriculture (1966)

Selection

In June 1998 he succeeded Haruo Tsuji as President. His immediately preceding post was Senior Managing Director and head of the Overseas Business Group, and before that he had overseen the home appliance business as Managing Director. After joining the board as deputy head of domestic sales, he spent 11 years shifting responsibilities between home appliances and overseas business. The change favored a career that had seen both domestic sales and overseas business over a record as a business group head.

Initiatives

In January 2004 he built the Kameyama Plant in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, adding the Kameyama No. 2 Plant in May 2006. The No. 2 Plant was the world's first to adopt eighth-generation mother glass, setting up production of panels for 50-inch and 40-inch class LCD color TVs. At the end of March 2007 the book value of the production and development base in Kameyama reached ¥268.9 billion. Consolidated net sales grew from ¥1,803.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2002 to ¥3,127.7 billion in the FY ended March 2007, when consolidated operating income was ¥186.5 billion and net income ¥158.2 billion.
