Background

He joined Hon Hai Precision Industry in July 1986 and became a representative director there in July 2001. After 30 years at Hon Hai, he became Representative Director and President of Sharp in August 2016 when Hon Hai made Sharp a subsidiary. He was a President who came in from the parent company, with no prior work history at Sharp when he took office.

In August 2016 he succeeded Kozo Takahashi as Representative Director and President. In the fiscal year ended March 2016, the year before he took office, the company posted an operating loss of ¥162.0 billion and a net loss of ¥255.9 billion on consolidated net sales of ¥2,461.5 billion, its second straight year of losses after a net loss of ¥222.3 billion the previous year. Employees had also fallen by 5,585 in one year, from 49,096 in the FY ended March 2015 to 43,511. Hon Hai, the acquirer, put at the top a board member who had spent 30 years at the company.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 2017, the year after he took office, the company posted operating income of ¥62.5 billion, ending two straight years of operating losses. Net sales shrank to ¥2,050.6 billion, down ¥410.9 billion from the previous year. In the FY ended March 2018 net sales were ¥2,427.2 billion, operating income ¥90.1 billion and net income ¥70.2 billion, a return to a bottom-line profit. Employees rose by more than 10,000, from 43,511 in the FY ended March 2016 to 54,156 in the FY ended March 2019. In June 2018 he became Representative Director, Chairman, President and Executive Officer, and in June 2020 handed the presidency to Katsuaki Nomura.
