Background
He joined Sharp in April 1981, became head of the System LCD Development Group in February 2001 and Director and head of the Mobile LCD Group in June 2003. He oversaw the LCD business as Managing Director from May 2005, and in April 2006, as Representative Director and Senior Managing Director, oversaw the AV and large LCD businesses while heading the AV Systems Group. He spent the 26 years from joining to becoming President developing LCD panels and running the LCD and AV businesses.

In April 2007 he succeeded Katsuhiko Machida as Representative Director and President. Born in December 1957, he was 49 when he took office, in his 26th year with the company. Takashi Okuda, who became a Director in the same month of June 2003, would become President five years later in April 2012; Katayama, who oversaw the LCD business, was chosen first. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥3,127.7 billion and operating income ¥186.5 billion.
Initiatives
In October 2009 the company built an LCD panel plant in Sakai Ward, Sakai, and in March 2010 a solar cell plant in the same ward. In the fiscal year ended March 2008, his second year, it posted net sales of ¥3,417.7 billion and operating income of ¥183.7 billion, but in the FY ended March 2009 it swung to an operating loss of ¥55.5 billion and a net loss of ¥125.8 billion. In the FY ended March 2012, his final year, the net loss was ¥376.0 billion.
