Background

A career employee, he graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1939 and joined Fuji Electric Manufacturing the same month. He became manager of the electrical machinery division's Kawasaki Works in July 1965, a Director in November 1967, and head of the First Industrial Division in July 1968, rising to Managing Director in November 1970. From December 1971 he led the Sales Administration Headquarters and from March 1974 the Electrical Machinery Business Headquarters, overseeing sales and business operations, then became Senior Managing Director in June 1976 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in June 1978. He was an engineer who had passed through both the factory and sales.

Education: University of Tokyo, Faculty of Engineering, Electrical Engineering (1939)

Selection

In June 1981 he succeeded Fukushige Shishido as President. Having joined in March 1939, he took 42 years to reach the top. His path differed from that of Shishido, who reached the presidency 11 years and 9 months after moving over from Dai-Ichi Bank; Abe's career ran through the front line as manager of the Kawasaki Works, head of the First Industrial Division and head of the Electrical Machinery Business Headquarters. In the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥295.3 billion and net income ¥4.1 billion, a recovery from the fiscal year ended March 1976, when net income had all but vanished. Shishido moved to Representative Director and Chairman the same day.

Initiatives

He served five years, from June 1981 to June 1986. In September 1984 the company changed its name from Fuji Electric Manufacturing to Fuji Electric. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥295.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, to ¥381.2 billion in the FY ended March 1985, and net income rose from ¥4.1 billion to ¥6.7 billion. The vending machine business, started in 1969, took the top domestic share of 40% in December 1987, the year after he stepped down, and Fuji Electric Reiki, which ran it, listed on the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in February 1988.
