Background

He graduated from Kobe University of Commerce in March 1937 and joined Dai-Ichi Bank, where he became manager of the Hibiya branch in January 1959 and general manager of the First Credit Examination Department in May 1962. He moved to Fuji Electric Manufacturing in February 1963 as head of the President's Office and became a Director in November that year. He rose to Managing Director in November 1965, Senior Managing Director in November 1970 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in November 1972. He came from finance by way of bank credit examination, not from the ranks of heavy electrical engineers.

Education: Kobe University of Commerce (now Kobe University) (1937)

Selection

In November 1974 he succeeded Shichinoshin Maeda as President. Takamichi Kasaba, who had served alongside him as Representative Director and Executive Vice President until that day, joined in March 1935 and took 37 years to reach that post after managing the Mie and Kawasaki plants. Shishido became President 11 years and 9 months after joining in February 1963. In the fiscal year ended March 1976, the year after he took office, sales fell to ¥184.8 billion and net income all but vanished. The choice fell not on a career engineer but on a man from bank credit examination.

Initiatives

He served six years and seven months, from November 1974 to June 1981. In September 1976 he reorganized the struggling home appliance division into three companies. The vending machines begun at the Mie Plant in 1969 under his predecessor grew into a business that filled the gap left by shrinking appliances. Non-consolidated net sales rose from ¥191.3 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1975 to ¥295.3 billion in the FY ended March 1981, his final year, and net income from ¥1.9 billion to ¥4.1 billion. In June 1981 he became Representative Director and Chairman.
