Background
A career employee, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in 1928 and joined Fuji Electric Manufacturing in April that year. He became a Director in December 1947, Managing Director in November 1949 and Senior Managing Director in May 1956, and was named Representative Director and President in May 1958, 30 years after joining. Most of the senior and managing directors listed on the 1961 board were engineers from the engineering faculties of Tokyo or Kyoto Imperial University or from higher technical schools; economics graduates were a minority.
Selection
In May 1958 he succeeded Tsunesuke Wada as President. Wada, who graduated from Kobe Higher Commercial School in 1909, joined in September 1923 and had been President since November 1945, moved to Representative Director and Chairman the same day. Kanari had become Senior Managing Director only two years earlier, in May 1956. Wada stayed on as Chairman after the handover and still appears as Representative Director and Chairman on the 1962 board list. Kanari's successor was Chohei Aida, who had run affiliated companies.
Initiatives
He took office as President in May 1958 and served seven years until handing over to Chohei Aida in May 1965. He established the Chiba Plant in August 1961 and the Central Research Laboratory in September 1963. The period added an in-house research base to a business that had broadened with the May 1949 listing and the 1953 entry into semiconductors. In 1953 the company had also begun work on gas turbines through a tie-up with Escher Wyss of Switzerland, producing a portfolio that held semiconductors and prime movers alongside heavy electrical equipment.
