Back-to-back US acquisitions — Pioneer Eclipse and Cincinnati Time — establish the North American base (1990)
A buyer that kept the 1896 name
What Amano chose in these two acquisitions was to take the local subsidiary it had built over twenty-six years off the leading role. It merged its American manufacturing and sales arms in 1989, set up a holding company the following year, and used that holding company to have the acquired firm absorb the existing subsidiary. Read in order, the sequence suggests the shareholding vehicle and the operating company that would receive the business were prepared before the targets were chosen. The combination itself — Pioneer Eclipse in cleaning equipment, Cincinnati Time in time management and parking — simply copied into North America the mix of businesses already running side by side at home.
That the counterparties were long-established houses also shaped what followed. The clock company born in Cincinnati in 1896 still stands in Ohio thirty-four years after the acquisition, under the name Amano Cincinnati, with the Japanese parent’s name attached in front. North American sales in the year to March 2025 came to $157.7M (¥24bn), or 13.4% of consolidated sales. As a method by which a mid-sized Japanese precision-machinery maker builds scale abroad, the allocation of time recorded here is twenty-six years of exporting and local production, and two years of buying.
