Background
He joined the company in 1981, became a Director in 1997 and a Managing Executive Officer in 2001. He joined the year after "Travail" was launched, spending his early years on the front line as one information magazine after another was born. A career employee who joined under founder Hiromasa Ezoe, he became President in his 22nd year. In June 2003 he became Representative Director, President and COO, taking charge of execution while his predecessor Eiko Kono remained as CEO.
Selection
In June 2003 he succeeded Eiko Kono as Representative Director, President and COO. Kono stayed on as CEO, separating execution from ultimate responsibility. In the fiscal year before he took over, ended March 2003, revenue was ¥308.1 billion and ordinary profit ¥95.5 billion, in the period after the company had finished buying back the shares held by Daiei in 2000.
Initiatives
In December 2007 the company acquired 80.14% of the outstanding shares of Staff Service Holdings, the leader in temporary staffing, making it a subsidiary. Recruit's staffing business at the time ranked only fifth in the industry, with combined sales of about ¥190.8 billion across seven group companies, and the integration created a staffing group with sales on the order of ¥500 billion. In July 2010 it acquired The CSI Companies in the United States, and in 2011 brought Staffmark Group and Advantage Resourcing Europe under its umbrella. Its own stand-alone business in China, started in 2004, was wound up in 2011.
