Background

Born in 1914, he graduated from the Faculty of Law of Tokyo Imperial University in 1939 and joined Fuji Iron & Steel. He became a Director in May 1965 and a Senior Managing Director in March 1970, becoming a Senior Managing Director of Nippon Steel with the merger with Yawata Iron & Steel that same month. He became Executive Vice President in June 1977. A career employee, he rose to the board not in the Yawata line but at Fuji Iron & Steel.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law (1939)

Selection

In the 1977 officer listings, ten Executive Vice Presidents served under President Eishiro Saito, with Takeda listed first. Five of the ten, Takeda, Shunji Ouchi, Kanae Harada, Saburo Tabe and Shigeru Toyoda, came from Fuji Iron & Steel, evenly balanced against five from Yawata. He was still listed as Executive Vice President in the 1979 edition, and in June 1981 succeeded Saito as President. From Terutaka Tasaka onward, the presidency appears to have alternated between Fuji and Yawata alumni.

Initiatives

In his first year, FY ended March 1982, net sales were ¥3,102.2 billion and net income ¥56.0 billion, down from ¥3,112.6 billion and ¥71.0 billion the year before. With a strong yen and weaker steel demand, net sales fell to ¥2,659.7 billion and net income to ¥3.9 billion in FY ended March 1984, and in 1987 the company embarked on its fourth rationalization program and diversification. FY ended March 1985 brought net sales of ¥2,860.0 billion and net income of ¥41.5 billion. In June 1987 he stepped back to Chairman, handing the presidency to Hiroshi Saito.
