Background

He joined Nippon Steel in April 1970 and, after posts including general manager of the secretarial department, became a Director in June 1999. He became a Managing Director in April 2003 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2005. It was 29 years from joining to the board and 38 years to becoming President. After becoming President he also served as chairman of Baosteel-NSC Automotive Steel Sheets.

Selection

In April 2008 he succeeded Akio Mimura as President, with Mimura moving to Representative Director and Chairman. Fellow Executive Vice President Hidetoshi Sekizawa, listed in the same annual securities report, had joined Yawata Iron & Steel in April 1969 and was promoted in exactly the same months as Muneoka: Director in June 1999, Managing Director in April 2003 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2005. Muneoka was chosen from these two running neck and neck. In FY ended March 2008, just before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥4,826.9 billion and net income ¥354.9 billion.

Initiatives

In October 2012 the company merged with Sumitomo Metal Industries and changed its name to Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal. With the merger, Nippon Steel City Produce merged with Kowa Real Estate and shifted from a consolidated subsidiary to an equity-method affiliate, and the four engineering, chemical, materials and solutions companies all adopted the Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal name. Consolidated net sales went from ¥4,090.9 billion in FY ended March 2012, before the merger, to ¥5,516.1 billion in FY ended March 2014, and the net loss of ¥124.5 billion in FY ended March 2013 turned into net income of ¥242.7 billion the following year.
