Background

He joined Fuji Iron & Steel in April 1963. Fuji merged with Yawata Iron & Steel in March 1970 to form Nippon Steel, so Mimura was a pre-merger Fuji hire. After posts including general manager of sales coordination, he became a Director in June 1993, a Managing Director in April 1997 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in April 2000. It took him 30 years from joining to reach the board and another 10 to become President.

Selection

In April 2003 he succeeded Akira Chihaya as President. In FY ended March 2003, just before he took over, consolidated net sales were ¥2,749.3 billion and ordinary profit ¥68.9 billion, but there was a net loss of ¥51.6 billion, following a ¥28.4 billion loss in FY ended March 2002, for two straight years in the red. Promoted after three years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President from April 2000, a sales man who had headed sales coordination was installed as President while the company had yet to fully escape its losses.

Initiatives

In March 2006 he introduced takeover defense measures requiring anyone seeking to acquire 15% or more of the shares to provide information and allow a review period, and filed a shelf registration for stock acquisition rights. In July 2003 the company made Nippon Steel Chemical a wholly owned subsidiary, and in July 2006 transferred the Engineering Division and the New Materials Division by corporate split to Nippon Steel Engineering and Nippon Steel Materials. Consolidated net sales rose from ¥2,749.3 billion in FY ended March 2003 to ¥4,826.9 billion in FY ended March 2008, and the bottom line went from a ¥51.6 billion loss to ¥354.9 billion in net income.
