Selection

In June 2001 Murakami became President, succeeding Hisashi Hieda, who moved to Representative Director and Chairman the same month. Hieda had served as President for 13 years from June 1988. Hieda too had become President via head of the Programming Bureau and Director and head of the Programming Bureau, making it two generations in a row of appointments from programming. The annual securities report for the fiscal year ended March 2006 lists Murakami's shareholding at 300 shares, below Hieda's 1,500.

Initiatives

In 2005, countering Livedoor's purchase of Nippon Broadcasting System shares, Fuji Television Network made Nippon Broadcasting System a wholly owned subsidiary. Consolidated revenue grew from ¥476.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2005 to ¥593.5 billion in FY ended March 2006. Net income fell over the same period from ¥22.8 billion to ¥11.3 billion, recovering to ¥24.8 billion in FY ended March 2007. In June 2007 Murakami handed the presidency to Ko Toyoda.
