Background
Born in Kagoshima Prefecture, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at Tokyo Imperial University in March 1927 and joined Nippon Chisso Hiryo the following year, 1928. He became a director of that company in 1947 and Managing Director of Shin Nippon Chisso Hiryo in 1950. Sekisui Chemical was launched in March 1947 as Sekisui Sangyo, when some employees of Nippon Chisso Hiryo planned a comprehensive plastics business, and Jiroo Ueno was a manager sent out as an executive from the parent side.
Selection
In September 1951, while still a director of Shin Nippon Chisso Hiryo, he became President of Sekisui Chemical. It was a time when plastic tape, which began selling at the end of 1949, had become a hit, and the business of a company that started with capital of ¥100,000 was finally getting on track. In May 1957, while remaining President, he resigned as a director of Shin Nippon Chisso Hiryo and became a corporate auditor there; the appointment appears to have been a Nippon Chisso-style arrangement in which a parent company executive ran the new company while holding both posts.
Initiatives
The company listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange in March 1953 and the Tokyo Stock Exchange in April 1954, and with the Central Research Laboratory in June 1956, the Shiga Ritto and Shiga Minakuchi plants in 1960 and the establishment of Tokuyama Sekisui Industry in January 1964, it built an integrated system from raw materials to molded products. The aggressive management extended to setting up a string of subsidiaries, including regional Sekisui companies and Sekisui America, but met with collapse in 1965. In February 1966 he became Chairman without representative authority.
