Background

He joined Sekisui Chemical in August 1962 and became head of the General Development Office in April 1988. After joining the board he was in charge of the Purchasing Department and the Tokyo Purchasing Department, became head of the Techno Materials Business Headquarters in January 1993 and in March 1997 took charge of the General Planning Office and the International Department, moving back and forth between business divisions and head office. He became a Director in June 1989, Managing Director in June 1993 and Senior Managing Director in June 1997, and Executive Vice President in January 1999. As of the fiscal year ended March 2008 he held 217,000 shares.

Selection

He became Executive Vice President in January 1999 and, five months later in June of that year, Representative Director and President. It took ten years from joining the board in June 1989 to the presidency, and he was Executive Vice President for less than half a year. Just before taking office he was in charge of the General Planning Office and International Department, having been in head office planning since March 1997. The two Senior Managing Executive Officers on the same officer list had taken 27 and 28 years from joining to reach the board, no different from Okubo's 27.

Initiatives

In March 2000, the year after he took office, he reorganized the seven business headquarters into three, Housing, Environment and Lifeline, and High Performance Plastics, plus a New Business Headquarters. In March 2001 these three headquarters became companies, and in April 2002 head office functions were consolidated into five departments and two offices. In housing, sales operations were spun off one after another, with Sekisui Heim Chugoku established in April 2003, Tohoku in August 2004, Kyushu in July 2005, and Tokyo, Chubu and Kinki in July 2007. Through acquisitions, the company brought South Korea's Youngbo Chemical under its umbrella in April 2003 and Daiichi Pure Chemicals in October 2006.
