Background
Born in Tokyo, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1944 and joined Sekisui Chemical in 1953. He served as General Manager of Personnel from June 1966 and as General Manager of both Personnel and Labor Relations from March 1968, moving to General Manager of the No. 1 Division in April 1970. He became a Director in May 1971, Managing Director in November 1973, Senior Managing Director in June 1976 and Executive Vice President in June 1978, rising through the executive ranks by way of both personnel and business divisions.
Selection
In June 1979 he became Representative Director and President, succeeding Kenzo Shibata. His predecessor Shibata had come from Chisso, Kenji Shimoda before him from the Bank of Japan, Kenzo Obata from Asahi Chemical Industry and Jiroo Ueno from Nippon Chisso Hiryo, so Sekisui Chemical's presidents had come from outside in succession. Mototoshi Fujinuma was the first career employee to become President, 26 years after joining.
Initiatives
When he took office, Sekisui Chemical's structure combined steel-frame unit housing, which it had entered in 1971, with PVC pipes and molded products, under a business headquarters system introduced in May 1977. In March 1982 it began selling the wood-frame unit house Two-U Home, expanding its housing product lines to two. As someone from the personnel department, he appears to have been a President who inherited the running of the business headquarters system and the expansion of the housing business.
