Background

He joined Sekisui Chemical in April 1976. He joined the board 29 years later, in June 2005, then became Director and Managing Executive Officer in April 2008 and Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer in April 2009, and after about six years at that rank became President. A career-employee President, he had no shareholding backing. In the fiscal year ended March 2016 the largest shareholder was Asahi Kasei at 6.08%, with operating companies such as Sekisui House at 2.35% near the top.

In March 2015 he became President, succeeding Naofumi Negishi. In the fiscal year ended March 2014, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥1,110.9 billion, operating income ¥82.5 billion and net income ¥41.2 billion, up from ¥1,032.4 billion, ¥59.6 billion and ¥30.2 billion the year before. The change came after about six years as Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer, and was not a takeover after deteriorating results.

Initiatives

In December 2015 the company acquired Eidia, Eisai's diagnostics subsidiary, strengthening its life science field. In August 2017 it acquired management control of the Polymatech Japan group, and in November 2019 it acquired AIM Aerospace Corporation of the US, expanding its mobility materials domain. In April 2017 it merged four housing production companies in Kanto, Chubu and Kinki to establish Sekisui Heim Industry. Net sales went from ¥1,112.7 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2015 to ¥1,142.7 billion in FY ended March 2019, and operating income from ¥85.8 billion to ¥95.7 billion.
