HRMOS and the spread from success fees into subscription revenue (2016)

Key decision·2016· Visional — the full company history →

What diversifying a revenue base actually means

It is too early to read the shift away from success-fee revenue as a triumphant story of new pillars raised one after another. HRMOS, launched in 2016, still carried $61.3M (¥9bn) in cumulative operating losses seven years later; the excursions into logistics and security never grew into anything central; BizHint and Careertrek were let go along the way. Most of the seeds Minami planted have not become profitable pillars on their own. Where the diversification did take shape was not as a separate pillar standing apart from BizReach, but as the integration of a hiring platform with HRMOS bound around it.

Even so, the design itself — layering subscription software that is hard to cancel on top of success fees that swing with the economy — appears to be what supported the unbroken revenue growth after listing. Revenue rose from $261.4M (¥29bn) to $535.9M (¥80bn), most of it carried by the HR Tech segment that contains HRMOS. Diversifying a revenue base is less the work of raising a new pillar to replace the earner than the work of weaving recurring revenue around the existing one, damping the wobble of standing on one leg. The number of seeds that never flowered is the measure of how hard that is.
