Selection

In April 2007 he became President, succeeding Ryuichi Tomizawa. The holding company Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings had been launched in October 2005, and this was the first change from its first President. In the fiscal year ended March 2007, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥2,622.8 billion, operating income ¥128.6 billion and net income ¥100.3 billion, all on a par with ¥2,408.9 billion, ¥133.6 billion and ¥85.5 billion the year before. On taking office he also became President of the main operating company, Mitsubishi Chemical, heading both the holding company and the operating company himself.

Initiatives

In 2007 he made Mitsubishi Plastics a wholly owned subsidiary through a share exchange, consolidating the performance products business directly under the holding company. In 2010 he made Mitsubishi Rayon a subsidiary through a tender offer, investing about ¥210 billion together with a share exchange that same year. During his tenure consolidated operating income fell to ¥8.2 billion with a net loss of ¥67.1 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2009, but by FY ended March 2015, the year he stepped down, net sales had recovered to ¥3,656.2 billion and operating income to ¥165.7 billion. Compared with the year before he took office, net sales were about 1.4 times higher, and employees doubled from 33,447 to 68,263.
