Background

A career employee, he joined Mitsubishi Chemical in April 1977. He became an Executive Officer in June 2007 and Director and Managing Executive Officer in June 2010. From June 2009 he also served as a director of the holding company Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings. In April 2012 he moved to President of the group company Mitsubishi Rayon, heading an operating company. He became President of the holding company in April 2015, in his 38th year with the company.

Education: Kyoto University, Graduate School of Chemical Engineering (1977)

Selection

In April 2015 he succeeded Yoshimitsu Kobayashi, who had been President for eight years. Kobayashi moved to Chairman the same month, and the roles of Chairman and President came to be held by different people. In the fiscal year ended March 2015, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥3,656.2 billion and operating income ¥165.7 billion, up from ¥3,498.8 billion and ¥110.5 billion the year before. The change came while the group held three companies, Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsubishi Plastics and Mitsubishi Rayon, and a former president of an operating company moved up to head the holding company.

Initiatives

In April 2017 he merged Mitsubishi Chemical, Mitsubishi Plastics and Mitsubishi Rayon to launch Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, folding the operating companies into one 12 years after the holding company's establishment. Investing a total of ¥491.8 billion in a tender offer from November 2019 and a demand for share cash-out, he made Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma a wholly owned subsidiary in March 2020, ending the parent-subsidiary dual listing. Consolidated revenue grew to ¥3,840.3 billion with operating income of ¥294.8 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2019, but in FY ended March 2021, the year he stepped down, fell to revenue of ¥3,257.5 billion, operating income of ¥47.5 billion and a net loss of ¥7.5 billion.
