Background

He joined Dow Corning in the US in August 1989, serving as Corporate Vice President from June 2005 and Executive Vice President from June 2009. He moved to Avantor Performance Materials in the US as CEO in February 2011, and to NuSil Technology in the US as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer in February 2012. From September 2014 he spent about six years as CEO of France's Roquette. He had never worked as an employee of the Mitsubishi Chemical group, and became President two months after joining as Executive Advisor in February 2021.

Selection

In April 2021 he became President, succeeding Hitoshi Ochi. He had been with the Mitsubishi Chemical group only since February of that year, an appointment from outside. In the fiscal year ended March 2021, the year before he took office, consolidated revenue was ¥3,257.5 billion, operating income ¥47.5 billion and net loss ¥7.5 billion, a swing into the red from ¥3,580.5 billion, operating income of ¥144.3 billion and net income of ¥54.0 billion the year before. Right after a loss-making year, the company brought in from outside someone with a long record of running chemical materials businesses overseas.

Initiatives

In July 2022 the company changed its name from Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings to Mitsubishi Chemical Group. During his tenure consolidated revenue grew from ¥3,976.9 billion in the fiscal year ended March 2022 to ¥4,634.5 billion in FY ended March 2023, and was ¥4,387.2 billion in FY ended March 2024, the year he stepped down. Operating income was highest at ¥303.2 billion in FY ended March 2022, fell to ¥182.7 billion in FY ended March 2023, and recovered to ¥261.8 billion in FY ended March 2024. Net income stayed in the black in all three years of his tenure.
