Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Kyoto University in September 1943 and joined Denki Kagaku Kogyo in October of that year. He became General Manager of the Osaka Branch in December 1971, a Director in November 1972, Managing Director in November 1974, Senior Managing Director in October 1977 and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in December of that year. It took him 29 years from joining to reach the board, but only six years from branch manager to Executive Vice President.

He became Representative Director and President in June 1981. The 1981 edition's officer listing shows Yaroku Hanaoka as Chairman and Shinohara as President. In the 1980 edition there were two Executive Vice Presidents, Shinohara and Tadao Matsumoto, the latter an outsider who had joined Nippon Kangyo Bank in 1940. In the fiscal year ended March 1981, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥189.9 billion and ordinary income ¥3.9 billion; ordinary income had fallen to a third of the previous year's ¥11.1 billion, on sales of ¥190.3 billion.

Initiatives

In the fiscal year ended March 1982, his first year, net sales were ¥192.8 billion and ordinary income ¥5.5 billion, recovering from ¥3.9 billion the year before. In FY ended March 1983 they fell again, to ¥188.0 billion and ¥2.3 billion. Right after he took office, the company carried out bonus issues of 2% in September 1981 and 5% in April 1982. As of FY ended March 1980, the top ten major shareholders were life insurers and banks, led by Mitsui Life Insurance at 7.22%.
