Background

He graduated from Tokyo University of Commerce in March 1929 and joined Denki Kagaku Kogyo in May of that year. He became a Director in July 1955, Managing Director in November 1958, Senior Managing Director in May 1962, Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in November 1966, and Representative Director and Executive Vice President in November 1968. It took him 26 years from joining to reach the board, and another 15 years from Director to President.

Selection

He became Representative Director and President in November 1970. The officer listings in the 1969 and 1970 editions show three Executive Vice Presidents side by side, Masao Taniguchi, Hanaoka and Tomiki Yamauchi, all of the same generation, having joined the board between July 1955 and November 1956. Of the three, Hanaoka, who had joined the company earliest, advanced to President, and Taniguchi appears in the 1971 edition as Chairman. In the fiscal year ended March 1970, the year before he took office, net sales were ¥54.4 billion and net income ¥1.35 billion.

Initiatives

Over his ten and a half years, net sales grew 3.5-fold, from ¥54.4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1970 to ¥189.9 billion in FY ended March 1981. In April 1971 the Omuta Plant began producing fused silica, and Denka Engineering was established the same month. In September 1975 the Shibukawa Plant started producing the high-performance adhesive Hardloc. In July 1979 the company acquired shares of Toshiba Chemical Industry from Toshiba, taking on the pharmaceutical and diagnostics business that later became Denka Seiken.
