Background
He was born in Shiga Prefecture in 1889. He graduated from Tokyo Higher Commercial School in July 1913 but did not join Denki Kagaku Kogyo until May 1929, 16 years later. Nine years after joining, in December 1938, he became a Director, then Managing Director in July 1943, Senior Managing Director in March 1946, Representative Director and Senior Managing Director in December 1948, and Executive Vice President in December 1949. A commercial school graduate, he appears to have risen through a company with carbide and calcium cyanamide plants from the non-technical side.
Selection
He became Representative Director and President in August 1951. The promotion came one year and eight months after he became Executive Vice President. Denki Kagaku Kogyo had listed its shares on the Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya stock exchanges in May 1949, two years before he took office. In the fiscal year ended March 1952, just after he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥5.2 billion.
Initiatives
During his tenure from August 1951 to May 1968, the company established Denka Cement in September 1953, took a stake in Toyo Kagaku in July 1955 and established Gunma Kagaku in October 1958. In June 1962 the Ome Plant succeeded in producing domestic chloroprene rubber, Denka Petrochemical was established in November that year, the company acquired management control of Hinode Kagaku Kogyo in August 1965, and it launched its functional and processed products business in October 1966. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥5.2 billion in the fiscal year ended March 1952 to ¥41.8 billion in FY ended March 1968.
