Background

He joined the Japan Management Association in April 1972 and served as Representative Director and President of Japan Applied Research Institute from September 1983. He became a Director of Internet Initiative Japan in December 1992 and Representative Director, President and CEO in April 1994. As founder he also held shares: among major shareholders in the FY ended March 2006 he ranked third with 6.13%, the only individual in the top ten. The largest was Nippon Telegraph and Telephone with 24.71%, followed by Hero and Company with 19.96%.

Selection

In April 1994 he moved from Director in charge of planning to Representative Director, President and CEO. It was a promotion a year and four months after joining the board in December 1992. As the first president with no predecessor, the man who launched the company ran it himself. His tenure as President lasted about 19 years, until he moved to Representative Director, Chairman and CEO in June 2013.

Initiatives

After dealing with the 2003 collapse of Crosswave Communications, the company accepted a capital injection from the NTT group. In the FY ended March 2006, the major shareholders included Nippon Telegraph and Telephone at 24.71% and NTT Communications at 4.99%, so the NTT group held about 30%. He shifted revenue from mainly connectivity services to recurring-revenue services for corporate clients, and non-consolidated revenue grew from ¥49.8 billion in the FY ended March 2006 to ¥82.4 billion in the FY ended March 2011, and operating income from ¥2.4 billion to ¥4.1 billion. In the FY ended March 2013, consolidated revenue was ¥106.2 billion and operating income ¥7.8 billion.
