Background

He graduated from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University in 1934 and joined the company. At a chemical company in Nobeoka that had branched out from ammonia into rayon, explosives and celluloid, he rose to the board with a law degree. He became a Director in March 1947, 13 years after joining, and Managing Director in May that year, then Senior Managing Director in April 1958 and Director and President in July 1961. His predecessor Takenobu Kataoka was also a graduate of Keio University's Faculty of Law, so Asahi Kasei appointed law graduates as President two times in a row.

Education: Tokyo Imperial University, Faculty of Law, English Law (1934)

Selection

In July 1961 he became President as Takenobu Kataoka moved to Chairman. In the same month, Executive Vice President Koichi Katagiri stepped down to Director and moved to become President of Asahi-Dow, and Senior Managing Director Zenzaburo Ueki also stepped down to Director to become President of Shin Nihon Kagaku Kogyo. Katagiri, born in 1901, was a senior figure who had joined Nippon Chisso Hiryo in 1923, and Miyazaki, born in 1909, passed over both men to become President at 52. The appointment appears not to have been made by seniority.

Initiatives

In the year he took office, he set out a diversification strategy using profits gained from rationalizing textiles to cover losses in new businesses. In July 1968 the company established Sanyo Petrochemical, investing about ¥100.0 billion in Mizushima, comparable to its sales at the time. Hebel autoclaved lightweight concrete, whose manufacture began in August 1967, was developed into a detached-house brand through Asahi Kasei Homes. From December 1980 the company entered a second diversification into nuclear power, electronics and pharmaceuticals. Non-consolidated net sales grew from ¥48.4 billion in the FY ended March 1962, his first year, to ¥765.2 billion in the FY ended March 1985, his final year.
