Background
He joined Asahi Kasei in April 1975. He served as Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei Pharma from October 2003, its Director and Managing Executive Officer from April 2008 and its Representative Director and President from April 2010, gaining management experience at the pharmaceutical subsidiary. He became an Executive Officer of Asahi Kasei itself in April 2011, and three years later, in June 2014, Representative Director and President.

In June 2014 he succeeded Taketsugu Fujiwara as Representative Director and President. In the FY ended March 2014, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,897.7 billion and operating income ¥143.3 billion, up more than 50% from ¥92.0 billion the year before. The consolidated workforce had also grown from 25,409 in the FY ended March 2012 to 29,127 in the FY ended March 2014. The change put a former president of the pharmaceutical subsidiary at the top of the parent.
Initiatives
In the FY ended March 2015, his first period, consolidated net sales were ¥1,986.4 billion and operating income ¥157.9 billion, both above the previous year. In his second period, the FY ended March 2016, sales fell to ¥1,940.9 billion, but operating income reached ¥165.2 billion, the highest of his tenure. Net income fell from ¥105.6 billion to ¥91.7 billion. The consolidated workforce grew from 30,313 to 32,821 over these two periods.
