Background
Born in Kyoto in 1893, he graduated from Kobe Higher Commercial School in 1917 and joined Mitsui & Co. There he served as manager of the Canton, Sendai and Fukuoka branches. He became Director and Executive Vice President of Nishi Nihon Boeki in June 1948, and joined Toyo Rayon as Managing Director in December 1949. After ten years as Managing Director he became Representative Director and President in March 1960, so he was not someone who had built his career within the company.

He became Representative Director and President in March 1960. In the FY ended March 1959, the year before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥59.0 billion and net income ¥3.51 billion, net income having fallen from ¥4.71 billion the year before. In the FY ended March 1960, his first year, sales recovered to ¥81.2 billion and net income to ¥8.17 billion. The Chairman was Shigeki Tashiro, who had likewise come from Mitsui & Co., joining in December 1936 and becoming President in November 1945.
Initiatives
In March 1963 the company set up Thai Toray Textile Mills as a joint venture with local capital, which began operating in April 1964. It also set up Toray Nylon Thai that same year, and these two were its first overseas joint ventures. In 1963 Toray was running at full capacity and could not grow sales without adding equipment. In September 1962 it established a Basic Research Laboratory. Non-consolidated net sales grew 2.2 times from ¥81.2 billion in the FY ended March 1960 to ¥179.2 billion in the FY ended March 1966, while net income fell from ¥12.3 billion in the FY ended March 1963 to ¥3.79 billion. In November 1966 he handed the presidency to Seiichiro Hirota.
