Background

He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Hiroshima Higher Technical School in March 1927 and joined Toyo Rayon in May that year. He became manager of the Shiga Plant and General Manager of Temporary Rayon Construction in March 1955, a Director in May 1956 and Managing Director in November 1960. In November 1963 he became Representative Director and Executive Vice President. A plant engineer, he took 29 years from joining to the board and ten years from the board to the presidency.

Selection

In November 1966 he succeeded Kozaburo Mori as Representative Director and President. He was promoted after three years as Representative Director and Executive Vice President. In the FY ended March 1966, the year before he took office, non-consolidated net sales were ¥179.2 billion and net income ¥3.79 billion, net income having fallen for two straight periods from ¥12.2 billion in the FY ended March 1964. Shigeki Tashiro, who had become President in November 1945 and Chairman in March 1950, stayed on as Chairman, and Kizo Yasui, who had moved from Mitsui Bank, sat alongside him as Executive Vice President.

Initiatives

In August 1971, his final year in office, the company began producing Torayca carbon fiber. Non-consolidated net sales rose 71% from ¥179.2 billion in the FY ended March 1966 to ¥307.0 billion in the FY ended March 1971, and net income recovered from ¥3.79 billion to ¥14.4 billion. In November 1971 he handed the presidency to Tsuguhide Fujiyoshi, and in the same month Executive Vice President Kizo Yasui became Chairman.
