Background
Born in Aichi Prefecture in June 1939, he graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Tokyo in 1962 and joined Toray. He became Senior Managing Director in 1996 and was promoted to President the following year. It took him 34 years from joining to Senior Managing Director, and one year from there to President.
Selection
In June 1997 he took over the presidency from Katsunosuke Maeda, who became Chairman. It was a promotion the year after he became Senior Managing Director. In the FY ended March 1997, the year before he took office, consolidated net sales were ¥1,046.8 billion, ordinary income ¥56.4 billion and net income ¥23.3 billion, all up from the previous year. That was the period in which sales first exceeded ¥1 trillion.
Initiatives
Consolidated net sales grew to ¥1,087.7 billion in the FY ended March 1998, then fell to ¥990.5 billion in the FY ended March 2000, when the company posted a net loss of ¥65.7 billion. In the FY ended March 2002 sales were ¥1,015.7 billion and net income ¥3.8 billion, and in June that year he handed the presidency to Sadayuki Sakakibara.
